Valentine’s Day may have become some kind of cheesy cliché in recent times but it is still without doubt the most romantic day of the year. While the greeting card companies may have monopolised the holiday, transforming a beautiful, ancient homage to St Valentine into a commercial farce, thousands of men around Britain are forced, coerced, cajoled and encouraged into an over the top gesture for their loved one.
What William Hill is here to do is to make sure that those men (or women) that are planning to get down on one knee on February 14th 2013, know just when to plan a potential wedding or honeymoon and which sporting events they can incorporate for the following months.
We all have that mate who has booked his wedding for the first day of the football season, or is due to fly out on honeymoon on the day of the FA Cup third round, well we say no more!
Has your fiancé ever flicked through the pages of Wuthering Heights, dreaming of the day you take her in your arms in the rugged nature of the one and only Heathcliff? Travel to the beautiful and romantic Yorkshire moors (Bronte country no less) for your big day together before settling down together, not in front of a log fire in an idyllic wood cabin, but at Headingley or The Shay for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup. Fourteen teams from across the Rugby League world are descending on the UK and Ireland for the world Cup, so why travel the globe, let the culture come to you!
Rugby League World Cup – Starts 26th October – 254 days from Valentine’s Day
The woman in a beautiful gown, elegant and eye-catching. The man, dashing and handsome in a top hat, tails and all the trimmings. Of course I’m talking about Royal Ascot! So, why not, combine the two, save a little bit of cash on the hiring/purchasing of expensive clothing and try to win back some cash from the bookies in the process. If you want to really wow your lady, just tell her that the racecourse was the setting for a scene in the musical ‘My Fair Lady’ and she’ll be like putty in your hands.
Royal Ascot – Starts 18th June – 124 days from Valentine’s Day
For those wanting to celebrate their big day a little further afield and in more dazzling surroundings, Las Vegas has to be the place. The marriage capital of the USA has lost its tag as the garish and tacky venue for overweight Elvis impersonators and now boasts many beautiful locations to tie the knot. But, what if, just if, there was an international pool tournament happening right there and then in Sin City, pitting Europe and the US against each other in a brilliant battle? Well you’d have to go surely, oh wow, yes you would.
Mosconi Cup – Starts 9th December – 298 days from Valentine’s Day
Which bride-to-be wouldn’t be thrilled by the prospect of a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Brazil, home of the mysterious and tropical Amazon, situated in the heart of exciting South America. The home of Samba, Copacabana, Rio Beach, rich coffee and of course football. Oh football you say. Well in 2014 there just happens to be this minor tournament occurring called the World Cup. With enough time to save and enough scope to cover the fact you’re going to watch the football, this could be perfect.
World Cup 2014 – Starts 12th June 2014 – 483 days from Valentine’s Day
When we think of Australia we think of Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, Jason and Kylie, and shrimps on the Barbie….WRONG! We should be thinking about England’s Winter tour down under where fingers crossed we’ll be attempting to win the famous urn for a second time in little over eight months. Now, your Mrs. (or Mr.)-to-be might not find the thought of sitting in the sun for eight hours watching the cricket, while smashing in some Fosters and singing with the Barmy Army the most appealing. So, get her/him involved, buy her/him an inflatable kangaroo, put an England shirt on it and hey presto!
The Ashes – Starts 21st November – 280 days from Valentine’s Day
How many times have you had to sit through Sex and The City on DVD and listen to the fiancé say, oh I’d love to go there. Well the honeymoon is the perfect chance. Start in downtown Manhattan and show her all the sights from the hit show, from the comfort of your taxi, as you make your way to Flushing Meadows for the US Open tennis. Andy Murray made history by becoming the first Brit to win a Grand Slam since Fred Perry at the famous venue back in the Autumn. So she should appreciate a trip to this historic landmark!
Starts August 26th – 193 days from Valentine’s Day
