Gentlemen’s Wimbledon final preview

Mark Swarbrick, Head of In Play Trading, previews the Gentlemen’s final.

Well we have ended up with the best player in the world this year playing arguably the best player ever on a grass in what promises to be an absolute belter of a final come Sunday afternoon.

Novak Djokovic (4/5) is slightly favoured over Roger Federer (11/10) in this potential classic match-up. Djokovic came through in straight sets against Richard Gasquet in his semi-final and is hitting top form just at the right moment, but for anyone who has read the blogs through the tournament will know, I really think from what I’ve seen that the potential for the loss in the French open final to affect the Djokovic performance here is a major factor.

The H2H statistics show a very slight advantage to Djokovic 20-19, and their meetings here on the grass at Wimbledon have been split 1-1, Djokovic winning a classic 5 setter in the final last year, whilst Federer won the semi in 2012 in 4 sets. During this calendar year it’s 2-1 to Djokovic, the Serbian winning in the final at Rome 6-4 6-3 and 6-3 6-7 6-2 in the final at Indian Wells, the lone Federer victory coming on the hard courts in Dubai 6-3 7-5. Overall nothing much to spilt these 2 players from the history between them.

There is no doubt that this is by far the most comfortable surface for Federer, his court coverage here is second to none, and his serve has been in fantastic shape over the fortnight. In his semi-final against Murray (one of the best returners of serve in the game) he conceded only a single break point opportunity, which he saved, and indeed has dropped his serve only once through the entire tournament.

Given this fact it’s the Federer side of the fence I fall on and at 11/10 I believe he represents decent value in the final, the crowd will be right behind him as he attempts to win his 8th crown here after an absence of 3 years. Despite the close nature of the prices it could well be a repeat of the semi-final if the Federer serve is working as well as it has so I’m bucking the trend and going for a straight sets victory for the Swiss legend which is priced at 5/1.

There will be plenty of opportunity to get involved in the final both pre-match and In Play and remember you are always in control of your wager with the Cash In My Bet facility available on selected markets.

So it’s Federer for me to end what has been a highly entertaining fortnight at Wimbledon, good luck and enjoy the spectacle.
